After changing the HST fluid in my JD4400 at 80 hours, I noticed about a teaspoon of metal shavings on the suction screen and this didn't seem like much of an issue to those that replied on this forum or via e-mail. When I changed HST fluid, I drained the 7.5 gallons into three clean plastic kittylitter buckets. I found the time and place to legally dispose of this fluid after a month and when I poured the fluid out of the buckets, there was about one-sixteenth of an inch of solid dark gray metallic dust that had settled to the bottom of each bucket, covering the entire bucket bottoms. IS THIS NORMAL???? I cut the filter in half and didn't find much of the dust in the pleated filter material, although perhaps that the filter had clogged and the fluid had bypassed it -- otherwise how would it be possible for that much metallic powder to be allowed to be suspended in the HST fluid??? JD did specify a much larger filter for the 4200-4400 HST tractors. In the past, when I changed HST fluid on my previous tractors, I disposed of the fluid immediately and didn't allow it to set for a month that would allow the fine metallic particles to settle. Anyone have any thoughts on this???

Mike,

The sediment level you described is normal. The hyrostat drive is very similar to an automatic trans in a car. The sediment is the result of the components meshing together during breakin. At your next change you should see less sediment, although you will still have the teaspoon or so of metal shavings. ....
